Jazz musicians of the 1930s, and more generally of the swing and bebop era, were called in African-American jazz slang “cats” 

a term that meant a skilled, seasoned and cool jazz musician. 

Jazz musicians often lived at night, playing in smoky clubs, and had a sly, independent, unpredictable attitude—in short, real cats.
